PRIVATE ROOM RENTALS

To find rooms for rent in Rome, you can look in the areas around the university. Many people with rooms to rent post notices on bulletin boards and elsewhere around the university, indicating what they have to offer. At the top of these notices is an indication of the neighbourhood, followed by the asking price and telephone number you can call. Or, you can stop by a newsagent ("edicola") and buy "Porta Portese" (or "SoloCase" or "PiùCase"). Porta Portese is a newspaper containing all sorts of free ads. The section dedicated to rooms for rent contains many listings of interest to students seeking accommodation.

HOW TO USE "PORTA PORTESE" AND FIND OUT WHETHER THE ROOM IS RIGHT FOR YOU

How do you settle on an accommodation that you find in the newspaper? Even if this sounds obvious, you first need to decide on what kind of room you want. If you have a clear idea before starting your search, you will get better results.
The prices for a good single room run around 350 € a month. A double room normally costs two-thirds of a single room.
When you call for more information about the room, remember to ask the owner whether the rent includes all condominium expenses (in some cases these can run to 75 euros, a month). Also ask for information on utility costs (electricity, water, gas, and telephone).

Generally speaking, it is advisable to pick an area along the routes of the Rome subway or a bus route that leads directly to the university without making transfers.
Of course, it is best to avoid renting a room that is too far from the university, even if it is centrally located. Some quarters, such as Trastevere, are truly beautiful and picturesque, but too far away. Reaching the university would be just too difficult.

A HOSTEL FOR THE FIRST FEW DAYS

Finding a room in Rome is the first big problem faced by Erasmus students upon their arrival. There are lots of rooms for rent, but they pose two basic problems. First, you actually have to find one. Second, you have to determine whether it is truly a good deal or not. In this context, hostels represent a good solution, for the first few days at least. They generally offer a good relationship between quality and price.

A FEW HOSTELS IN ROME

Following below is a short list of hostels located in Rome. It is not a complete list, and the prices indicated are only approximate. In several cases, the hostel listings include a brief commentary by tourists and students who have already stayed there. Nonetheless, it is always a good idea to check yourself in person before confirming reservations for medium and long-term stays but a lot of hostels allow you to stay only for a few days (max a week). Remember that a reservation commits YOU and the hostel operator. Once you make a reservation, you may NOT leave before the agreed ending date without paying a penalty!
