Airports
Rome has two major airports, Leonardo da Vinci - still
frequently known by its old name, Fiumicino - for scheduled
flights and Ciampino which handles mainly charter flights
and business aviation.
1) FIUMICINO: it is the most important airport in Rome,
and it is 30 km far from the city center. It is linked
to Roma Termini Station (platform n. 22) by a train system.
The journey takes about 30 minutes, and the fare is about € 7.
Trains from the airport to Roma Termini Station leave
from 8.00 a.m. to 10.07 p.m., with a frequency of 30
minutes, while trains from Roma Termini Station to Fiumicino
airport leave from 6.50 a.m. to 9.20 p.m., with a frequency
of 30 minutes. Tickets can be purchased from vending
machines located inside Domestic and International Arrival
Halls and at the railway stations, as well as from any
ticket office. Should you need to reach the city center
at night, there is a night bus from the airport to Roma
Termini Station or Roma Tiburtina Station.
A piece of advice: it is also possible to reach Roma
Tiburtina Station taking the train to Orte or Fara Sabina
from the airport: this train is a little slow, but the
fare is very cheap. You can also travel to the city center
by taxi, although this is a more expensive means, and
it will cost you about € 35.
2) CIAMPINO: it is 15 km far from the city center, to
which it is connected through Via Appia Nuova. From Ciampino
airport, you can travel to the city center by taxi (the
fare is about € 30) or you can take the blue bus
(Cotral) to Anagnina Metro Station and travel by metro
to Roma Termini Station. Unfortunately there is no night
bus connection downtown from Ciampino airport.
Trains
Within the central area of Rome there are six key interchange
stations (Flaminio, Trastevere, Ostiense, Termini, Tiburtina
and Tuscolana), integrated with the metro, bus and tram
services.
If you travel to Rome by train you will probably get
off at Termini Train Station. Once you have got off the
train, the exit gate close to platform n. 1 will lead
you to Via Marsala, while the exit gate close to platform
n. 22 will lead you to Via Giolitti; the main entrance
will lead you to Piazza dei Cinquecento, where you will
find buses and the metro lines “A” and “B”.
Tourist information will be available inside the Station
and in Piazza dei Cinquecento.
In case you get off at Tiburtina Train Station, it will
be easy to reach Termini Station by bus or by metro.
Buses and trams
The city is served by 238 bus routes and 7 tram routes
which operate from 05.30 to 24.00. Night bus services
comprise 27 routes operating from 00,10 to 05,30. You
will find information on routes and timetables at www.atac.roma.it.
The following pages will provide you with useful information
on how to reach the University of Rome Tor Vergata; you
will also fins maps showing the metro routes.
Underground
Rome's underground system is made up of two separate
lines that intersect at Termini, the main train station.
Both lines run from 5:30 am to 11.30 p.m., with a frequency
of 5 minutes.
Line A - Links the area of Cinecittà-Quadraro
in the south-east of the city with Termini rail station,
the historic centre of Rome and the area of Prati to
the west.
Line B - Links the EUR area to the south of the city
with the Basilica San Paolo, the Coliseum and the rail
stations of Ostiense, Termini and Tiburtina. The Line
B route ends in Rebibbia. Metro and bus tickets
The integrated metro and bus ticket - Metrebus - provides
you with the freedom of using all the modes of public
transport within the metropolitan area of Rome excluding
the direct rail link Termini - Fiumicino Airport. Tickets
must be bought before the commencement of your journey
from any Metro station, authorised vendor (newsagents,
tobacconists) and automatic ticket machines.
IMPORTANT: During your journey a ticket inspector may
ask you to show your ticket. Passengers who do not have
a valid ticket are liable to pay a fine of 25 €.
In the following pages you will find a presentation of
the different types of tickets and students discounts.
Taxi:
Licensed taxis are white or yellow, have a name, an
identification number, and are equipped with a taxi-meter.
Do not trust
people who approach you offering private taxi service.
Travelling by taxi is convenient if you can share the
cost of the ride with other passengers, since fares are
quite heavy. For example the taxi journey from Fiumicino
airport to the city centre is about € 35. Taxis
in Rome are available on a 24 hours basis. In addition
to the main taxi-ranks of the airport and of Termini
station, there are a lot of taxi-ranks in the city centre
(for example Largo Argentina). An additional cost is
charged for night service, luggage, feast-days, journeys
to and from the airports. Please, remember that in case
you call a taxi on the phone, the taxi-meter is turned
on when the taxi picks up the call. In the following
pages you will find more information on the main taxi-ranks
of the city.
Renting a car
If you wish to rent a car, you must be aged 21 (23
for some renting companies) and have a driving licence.
It
is much easier to rent a car if you have a credit card.
Please, do not forget to pay attention to what is actually
included in the renting fare (unlimited kilometres coverage,
taxes, insurance).
Renting a bike, motorbike or a moped
One of the best ways to wander around the city centre
is renting a bicycle. There is plenty of places where
you can do it, along the River Tiber banks and in the
north and in south of the city.
When renting a motorbike or a moped, a helmet, glasses
and a padlock and chain are usually included. Most renting
companies usually provide assistance for possible breakdowns
during working hours. Please, remember that you will
be asked to leave a deposit, cash or by credit card,
to rent a bike, motorbike or moped.
