Metrebus: an integrated public transport system

Rome is served by an integrated public transport system – Metrebus - operated by the companies Atac - Cotral - Trenitalia SpA. The system was realized in 1994 and includes a network of metro, bus, tram and metro-type rail services. Passengers can travel on the means owned by the three allied companies without distinction, according to the conditions and validity of the purchased ticket. The system is made up of Metrebus Roma, that allows passengers to use all public transport services within the metropolitan area of Rome, and Metrebus Lazio that allows mobility on the whole Lazio region. The region territory has been divided in seven concentric zones; each of the 377 cities of the region belongs to a single zone. The zones are named with six letters: A B C D E F; the area corresponding to the city of Rome includes two zones.
Thus, it is possible to travel with a single ticket :
- on a number of public transport services (buses and trams of the city of Rome and of Lazio Region, underground, trains)
- on a number of different routes
- within a single zone
- within the territory of different zones, excluding special links.
The integrated ticket fare varies according to the length of the route and to the number of zones you are travelling within. Different formulas Travel Cards can be purchased, that allow passengers to travel within up to seven zones. The maximum cost of a Travel Card corresponds to six zones. The maximum number of zones a Metrebus Lazio passenger is allowed to travel within is shown with a number printed on the card.
